A counselor — not a phone tree — answers within sixty seconds, day or night. Here is what the next 48 hours typically look like.

The first call to CPMH is answered by a licensed counselor. We listen first — what is happening, who else is at home, how urgent the situation is. Most calls last 20 to 25 minutes; about one in seven ends with a referral to a different program if CPMH is not the right fit, and that is exactly the point.

What to Bring on Day One

Our admissions counselor emails you a personalized checklist after assessment. The basics:

  • Photo ID and your insurance or Medi-Cal card
  • Current medications in original pharmacy bottles — including supplements
  • Seven days of comfortable, layerable clothing (laundry on-site)
  • Closed-toe shoes for the basketball court and outdoor yoga deck
  • Swimwear if you plan to use the therapy water spaces
  • A journal, books, recovery readings
  • Two or three meaningful photos for your nightstand
  • Alcohol-free toiletries (we will swap anything that contains alcohol)

Please leave at home: laptops and tablets, valuables, jewelry, weapons, anything containing alcohol, and outside medications not pre-cleared with our medical team.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will treatment last?

It depends on you. Medical detox is usually 3 to 7 days. Residential treatment runs 30 to 90 days — the median in our 2024 cohort sat at 64 days. PHP runs 2 to 4 weeks; IOP runs 8 to 12 weeks. We will recommend a length based on your assessment, and we revisit the plan every week with you.

What does my insurance actually cover?

Most major plans cover detox, residential, PHP, and IOP at CPMH. After your call, we verify your specific benefits — deductible, co-insurance, out-of-pocket maximum — and walk you through it in plain English before you commit to anything. Roughly 86% of 2024 residents had insurance cover the majority of their stay.

Can my family visit during treatment?

Yes. Scheduled weekend visits begin in week two of residential. Our Saturday family-restoration intensives are not extras — they are the heart of our framework. Family-systems therapy sessions are scheduled separately during the week and can happen in person or via video for relatives outside Orange County.

I am worried about detox. Will I be safe?

Yes, and you will be more comfortable than you are imagining. Our medical team is on the unit 24 hours a day during detox, monitoring vitals and adjusting medication-assisted treatment in real time. Supervised detox dramatically reduces both medical risk and the suffering people associate with quitting. You do not have to white-knuckle this.

I have tried treatment before. Will this be different?

About half of our 2024 admissions had been through at least one prior program. The research is unambiguous: prior treatment predicts better, not worse, outcomes this round. Each episode teaches the team something specific about what will work this time. Bring your previous treatment records if you have them.

What about my job and my kids?

This is the question we hear most. Our admissions team helps you think through FMLA paperwork, employer notification, childcare logistics, and short-term financial planning before you arrive. PHP and IOP exist specifically for working adults and parents who cannot step away for 60 days. The right level of care is the one you can actually finish.

What if I am older — will I fit in?

You will be in good company. About 17% of our 2024 residential cohort was 55 or older, and we have a dedicated senior-friendly track that addresses retirement, Medicare coverage, and the questions older adults bring to treatment. Margaret W., one of our recent alumni, came to us at 63 and now sponsors three other older adults from the alumni community.
